Cures for Public Speaking Fear

  1. Feel the fear and do it anyway! Don’t avoid speaking opportunities it will get worse
  2. Practice in front of a mirror or on video and replay with a coach or friend for feedback
  3. Focus on the present and breathe

Understand your topic and prepare for success:

First and foremost you must understand your topic and feel comfortable speaking on the subject.  Being prepared also can mean including any visual aids to help you deliver your topic in a clear and concise manner.  As you are preparing to speak, visualize your success and breathe deeply to relax.  Congratulate yourself each time you do a good job.  Everyone makes mistakes so be easy on yourself and practice, practice, practice.  Making mistakes is the only way you can become better so take it easy.  Join a support group and this will allow you to be with others having this same public speaking challenge.

What is glossophobia?

Yikes, what’s happening? It should be a breeze, right?  Even though you are speaking to your co-workers or presenting at the podium why do you want to cover your face or take off sprinting?  You have public speaking fear, plain and simple.   Don’t worry, there’s an explanation and it can manifest in other ways too.  Public speaking fear can also cause excessive sweating, heart racing, or uncontrollable shaking.  It’s actually a medical term known as glossophobia.   The feeling of glossophobia is a real fear and it is as scary as the fear of snakes, spiders, and even death.
