Yes, learning public speaking at the same time you were learning social skills and your ABC’s would have been ideal, and just think how many resources are put into our education system. Why can’t speech be part of the equation for our public education system like some private and charter schools recognize?  It’s certainly as important as science, history, economics, homeroom, and electives.

Why speech isn’t part of the public school priorities?

Was there a coin toss and public speaking lost out in every school district in the country?  Was there a concerted effort to push it to only those who made it to Speech 101 class in college?  Most who have taken those classes would agree it was a little tough to jump right into speaking at that point.  There’s help available through hiring a private speech coach, but most students don’t realize how reasonable it is, and that you can get a group of classmates together to share the minimal cost.

Traditional school systems have all the research.  They know the importance of public speaking so, why has it been sorely minimized in schools and academic pursuits?  Is it a private club of only the chosen few?  Why can’t it be the academic curriculum for all students in the public school system to learn this basic and needed life skill?  Ask anyone who has mastered public speaking, a big promotion or their dream job and I’m sure they will say that overcoming public speaking fear has been a key to their success.
